Insurance Smart Guide evaluates car insurance companies across five key categories: pricing competitiveness, claims satisfaction, financial strength, coverage breadth, and customer service. Our ratings are based on J.D. Power annual studies, AM Best financial strength ratings, NAIC complaint index data, and publicly available rate filings.
Best overall: USAA earns the highest ratings in virtually every category — pricing, claims, customer service, and coverage. It is available only to active duty military members, veterans, and their immediate family members.
Best for most drivers: Geico offers the most competitive rates for drivers with clean records and good credit, strong digital tools, and an A++ AM Best rating. The trade-off is below-average local agent availability.
Best local experience: State Farm has the largest agent network in the US with over 19,000 local agents. Its rates are competitive, particularly for teen and young drivers through the Steer Clear program.
Best for high-risk drivers: Progressive specializes in non-standard auto insurance and typically offers the most competitive rates for drivers with DUIs, multiple accidents, or SR-22 requirements.
J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study surveys thousands of insurance customers on price, billing process, interaction, policy offerings, and claims. USAA leads nationally with a score of 726/1000 but is ineligible for official ranking due to membership restrictions. Among ranked insurers, Erie Insurance leads with 724, followed by Amica at 721, and Auto-Owners at 718. Geico scores 713, State Farm 712, and Progressive 697.
