• State Department of Insurance rate filings: Insurers are required by law to file their rate schedules with each state's Department of Insurance. These public records are our primary source for rate data.
• J.D. Power Annual Studies: J.D. Power conducts the industry's most comprehensive consumer satisfaction studies for auto, home, and life insurance annually. We cite J.D. Power data with the specific study year.
• AM Best Financial Strength Ratings: We use AM Best ratings to assess insurer financial stability. All ratings cited are as of the date of our most recent content update.
• NAIC Complaint Ratio Database: The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes annual complaint ratios for all licensed insurers. We use this data to identify customer service outliers.
• Insurance Information Institute (III): We cite III data for industry-wide statistics and trend information.

• State minimum requirements: Reviewed annually and whenever state legislatures or DOIs announce changes

• All other content: Reviewed semi-annually for accuracy, relevance, and completeness

Fact-Checking Process

Every article published on Insurance Smart Guide goes through a two-stage review process:

1. Author research and writing: Marcus Holloway researches each topic using the primary sources listed above and writes the initial article draft.
